Queen Margaret's net gains

From the Evening Press, first published Wednesday 23rd Oct 2002.

QUEEN Margaret's School, Escrick, have ended Joseph Rowntree's nine-year domination of Under 19 netball in York.

They won the York Schools' tournament on Jo Ro's own patch after beating All Saints 19-3, York VI Form College 13-6, Joseph Rowntree 10-7 and St Peter's 12-6.

The only team to lower QM's colours were Huntington, who won 9-7. That gave Joseph Rowntree, who beat All Saints 10-2,

a chance to retain the title they had held since 1983. They defeated Huntington in an exciting final game 6-5 to make it a three-way tie for first place so the placings were determined by countback.

In the final analysis Queen Margaret's, the Escrick School won with 21 points, from Joseph Rowntree on 19, Huntington 18, followed by York College, St Peter's and All Saints

Both St Margaret's and Joseph Rowntree will go on to represent York in the county round of the national competition.

Jo Ro are the only school in York to have three teams through to the county round.
